Big Sean has disclosed that when he performed his 2014 smash song “I Do not Fuck With You” for Jay-Z and Beyoncé, he received contradictory advise from the power couple.
Sean made an appearance on a St. Brown Brothers Podcast episode earlier this week, which was hosted by Equanimeous St. Brown and Amon-Ra. When he was developing “IDFWU,” he was asked if he had any idea if it would “be the one.”
“I was just enjoying myself,” he replied. “Mustard and I were in the studio. I was merely playing around. I screwed with this Too $hort song in my own style because I really wanted to write a song like it. I simply freestyled that stuff after hearing the beat.
He remembered performing the song for the Carters prior to its publication.
“Beyoncé was like, ‘That is a little disrespectful,'” Sean said in reference to the encounter. For a female voice, perhaps Nicki Minaj should be featured.
However, Hov understood what the music was attempting to convey.
Sean went on: “JAY-Z said, ‘No,’ after that. People will understand that it is just you having a good time.
“[JAY] texted me once that was like, ‘Every day you are not putting that song out, you are losing,'” Sean stated after listening to the tune.
Sean published the song, which is now nine times platinum, in spite of his concerns that it was “a little dumb.”
